2026 VA Disability Pay Rates and the COLA Increase, Explained

Each year, VA disability compensation is adjusted for inflation through a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). For 2026, the increase is 2.8%, and it took effect December 1, 2025 — which means it first showed up in the payment veterans received in January 2026.
What the COLA actually does
The COLA raises every monthly compensation rate by the same percentage. It is the same adjustment applied to Social Security, and it is meant to keep your benefit’s buying power steady as prices rise. Your rating does not change — only the dollar amount attached to it.
Your amount depends on more than your rating
Two veterans with the same rating can receive different monthly checks. Your payment depends on:
- Your combined disability rating (10% through 100%).
- Whether you have a spouse, children, or dependent parents.
- Whether you qualify for added amounts such as Aid and Attendance for a spouse.
Dependents only add to your payment once your rating is 30% or higher.

A COLA raises the dollars, but the biggest change to your check usually comes from a higher rating or an additional service-connected condition. If your conditions have gotten worse, you can file for an increase — and if you cannot work because of them, you may qualify to be paid at the 100% rate through TDIU.
